I have been on a very long hop from Birmingham to Sandwell and Dudley, 8 miles! It was a very interesting walk I hopped passed lots of very noisy factories and lots of buildings that were falling down. I had to hop down some very dark tunnels and I thought I might fall in the water, which wouldn’t have been very nice as it was very dirty. Some of the tunnels had stalactites growing in them, they are made when water and lime drips down and builds little hangy down things. As well as tunnels there were also some big bridges to hop over that made my little legs hurt. I didn’t meet any dogs but I did meet a heron who was fishing. I asked him his name and he told me he was called Herbert, then he showed me his large wings, when I admired them he spread them and showed me how he could fly. He took off and skimmed the top of the water, I thanked him and told him I thought he was very handsome and he spread his wings again.

Keep hopping

I have been on a hop to Harvington Hall; Harvington Hall is a very old house with a little garden. First I hopped around the garden and said hello to the ducks that were having a little rest on the bank. They told me they were waiting for their dinner, some of the ducks must have thought they said dinner was here because all of a sudden they all started to quack and chase each other around. Then I went for a hop around the house, some of the rooms had pretend food and dead rabbits hanging from the ceiling, I didn’t like that bit! But it was to show you what the house would have been like when people lived there. In the house there were little hiding places, some people called them hides and other people call them priest holes. There were tiny little rooms hidden behind panels and in the roof for priest to hide in when the government came looking for them, because the government didn’t like the Catholic priests to take services and would chase them and then put them in jail or worse. I don’t think they were a very nice government.

There were some very old paintings on the walls too but they were hard to see, one was of a mermaid and some others were called Worthies, there are 11 Worthies and people had to pick 9 to have in their houses, I think they were pictures of very good people.

Then I had a hop around the old chapel which was used as a school too. There were a lot of steps to hop up and down and I was very tired, so I went home to tell my people all about the hop.

Oh I have had a busy day, I went to a 1940’s day, 1940 was a very long time ago and things were very different then. There was a war on so people didn’t have a lot of food, so they grew there own, (I know all about that because my people mommy grows lots of food in the garden), but they kept chickens and pigs too! People mommy doesn’t do that. I saw lots of things and went on lots of trains.

I had to get up very early because I had to get to a place called Kidderminster Station to catch my first train, so I hopped along to our local station and hopped onto the 08.08am train which stops right next door to the Kidderminster Station so it was only a short hop across the road. Outside the station were lots of people dressed up as soldiers and old cars and barriers everywhere. Inside the station there were lots of things to look at, old shops and little rooms where people were doing washing and cooking, a place made all of sandbags where the warden used to sit. The warden was the man that made sure you were behaving and hiding all your lights at night time so that the aeroplanes couldn’t see them in the dark, he also made sure everyone was in the right place and safe if the aeroplanes started to drop bombs. Then it was time for me to hop onto my train. It was a steam train, there was lots of smoke and steam coming out of the funnel and when we started off it mad a puff puff sound and the driver made the train make a toot toot sound with its whistle and as the train moved along it made me wobble about. I went all the way to Bridgnorth on this train.

At Bridgnorth station there were little stalls selling 1940s clothes and uniforms, and two people singing old songs about meeting again and cleaning windows. As I had a bit of time I hopped over the big bridge and up lots of steps to have a look at the castle. It’s not really a castle any more, it’s all fell down, there’s just one bit of a tower left and that is falling over. There is a nice big garden there now with lots of pretty flowers and a pergola which had lots of flowers and birds made from folded paper hanging from it. I hopped back to the station and got on the next train, (I was a bit naughty, I sat in a first class compartment, even though my ticket was for 3rd but I didn’t stay there). The next stop was Highley.

At Highley Station I had a hop around the Engine House which is a visitor centre, they have old trains in here to look at, they even have Gordon the train from Thomas the Tank Engine. I stopped to watch some very old films called News reels. I had never seen anything like this before, the film was on a big wheel that went into a machine called a projector and the film ran from one big wheel onto another, I could hear the projector chugging all the time, the pictures were very crackly and all in black and white and the man on the film talked funny. I saw a film about ladies clothes, and another where ships were being blown up, I would have liked to have watched more but it was time for the re-enactment (that means a pretend) of a battle on the train line. It all started with a speech made by a man called Winston Churchill who was prime minster in the 1940’s and he made lots of speeches that ‘kept peoples sprits up’ (and I would think they needed a lot of that), then a home guard man wound up the siren which was very loud, (this meant you had to go to the fall out shelters, which were sometimes in your garden and were little rooms) then some explosions, then the all clear was sounded which meant you come out of the shelters. But some Germans had parachuted down into the woods so the armies had to fight them off, there was a lot of explosions, and shooting of guns which was all very very noisy and a lot of running up and down the track with people falling over pretending to have been shot. Then it was all over and time to get the next train, but I couldn’t find a seat on the train it was all full up, so I had to stand in the guard’s compartment.

The next stop was Arley Station, here I saw a wedding, because there was a thing called rationing, (which means there wasn’t a lot of anything and everybody got the same amount and you had to make it last), people couldn’t have what they have now, so there was no big dress, the bride had on a red suit, and the cake was a little sponge cake. The vicar told us that the man had to go back to the war after the wedding but couldn’t tell us where because it was top secret, and that they had hoped to get married in the church but it had been bombed so that is why they were marrying on the station. At the end we all clapped and the vicar threw sweets to the children. I then went to look at the old cars and an old caravan, it wasn’t a bit like my people mommy and daddy’s caravan, it didn’t have a toilet or a proper cooker. But it looked a lot prettier. Then it was time for the next train. Which was full again!

The next stop was Bewdley I have been to Bewdley before so I hopped to the museum, but it wasn’t as good as last year so I had a little hop into the park, but I was getting very tired and hot, so I hopped back to the train Station and hopped on the train back To Kidderminster, and again the train was full, (I think they had sold too many tickets). At Kidderminster I heard the fly over, (that’s old aeroplanes) but I couldn’t see any because the clouds were hiding them, so I went to look around the museum which was full of old phones and bits of signals and things, then I went to have a ride on a 1940s bus, I went up stairs and was surprised to find it only had seats on one side, but they were big seats that 4 people could sit on, the bus was very bumpy and made me bounce around a lot. I didn’t have to pay the driver because all he did was drive the bus, a special man called a conductor walked around the bus taking the fares.

I was really tired by this time so I got on a real train to come home, I think I like old trains better.

Don’t for get to look at all my photos of my lovely day.

Keep hopping and leave me your words.

I have been on an adventure to the Forest of Dean; I have been here before in the winter time and it was very cold and snowy then. This time it was warm, so I decided to go for a canoe ride. I had my own canoe and paddled from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat that’s 6 miles. The nice man who took me to the starting point told me that when I came to rapids, (which is fast water going over rocks like a little waterfall), to paddle really fast, so I did, I had great fun. I saw lot’s of ducks and swans on the river but none of them wanted to talk, they were all on their nests because they all had babies or eggs to look after. I also saw the salmon, which kept jumping out of the river and landing back in with such a big splash. I got a bit dirty because there was water in the bottom of the boat, but I didn’t mind because I had such fun.

Another day I went on a very long hop from the campsite down the big hill and through the forest to Symonds Yat East, on this hop I saw a vole, but he ran away so quickly I didn’t get time to speak to him, when I got to Symonds Yat I took the hand ferry to West side and hopped all the way back up river to the suspension bridge. I got a little bit scared going over this bridge; it bounced about and creaked a lot! But I remembered what my people mommy had said. She told me when I was scared to think of something nice and carry on and that when I had done the scary thing I would feel so pleased with myself and she was right. I then hopped back up the big hill; I was very tried by the time I got back to camp, so I had to have a nap.

On the last day I hopped up another big Hill to a place called Symonds Yat Rock, from here you can see down into Symonds Yat and down into the river and I could see where I had canoed. There were a lot of people on top of the rock with cameras and big glasses called binoculars because they were looking for birds. I then hopped back down and through the forest, where I got a little bit lost because I didn’t read the map right, but I soon found the right path again. I saw some rocks and thought a climb would be fun, so I climbed up and ripped my dress.

When I got back home, my people mommy said she would sew up my dress, but I really needed to take a bath because I was very dirty, so I did. Then I went for a very long sleep.

I have been on a hop to a place called Bodenham Arboretum; an arboretum is a place full of different trees, a bit like a wood. This one had lots of things to see not just trees. There were pools and things called follies, which are buildings or strange things just dotted around, as well as some lovely flowers and a farm. I started my hop up a little hill and hopped down a little bridge under a weeping willow onto Giants Island where I sat at the Giants table, it was very, very big, then I hopped through some very tall trees called poplars and the little path was called Poplar Dingle. I saw lots of pools but not many ducks; the ones I did see were waddling along the grass and when I asked them where they were going they told me to follow them. They took me to a birdfeeder which was sat on a table very high up and they told me they waited underneath until the little birds had their dinner because they always threw some seed out and the ducks get to eat it. They asked if I want to join them as there was plenty of seed, I thanked them and told them I had had a very big breakfast. I then hopped a little further and through the bluebells, there were so many of them that when you hopped away from them and looked back the ground looked like it was covered in blue grass.

I hopped on through more trees and bluebells until I came to the Gazebo, which is like a little house, except it only has one room, it’s nice to sit in in the sunshine. I then hopped over to see the sheep in their field, the mommies and daddies where all lying down and the babies were playing, but every time they went a little too far away their mommies would bleat and they came running back. I hopped down a little hill and found a little pool which had a sundial in front of it; I had to climb up to read it! After another short hop I came to another bridge so I went across it and found myself on Big Island, where I found a very big weather cone, I think it would hurt you very much if it fell on your head!

I hopped a little further and came to the Laburnum Tunnel which is a tunnel with bright yellow flowers growing all over it, it was very pretty. Then I went for a look around the Azalea garden which had lots of Azalea with very big flowers that smelt lovely.

I met a butterfly, who was just as silly as all the other butterflies I have ever met; she wouldn’t keep still so that I could speak to her, so I gave up.

I hopped up some big hills and down the other side until I got back on the path, I was very tired by then so I went home for a carrot and a nap.

Keep hopping

And don’t forget you can leave me your words.

I spent another day having a hop by the side of the river to a place called Watersmeet, it’s where two rivers meet. It was very pretty and lots of the water was running over the top of big bricks making little waterfalls. I would have liked to have gone further but the clouds were going very black and I didn’t want to get wet so I went to a place called Woolacombe where it was very warm and sunny. I played on the sand and paddled in the sea, and watched some people standing on boards on top of the water. They ran out into the sea then jumped on the board and came back onto the beach on top of the waves. It looked like so much fun. I watched a dog running in and out of the water barking and getting all excited and when he came nearer to me I asked him what the people were doing. He told me it was called surfing and his man daddy was out there, and when he had finished he sometimes let him ride on the board too. Just then his man daddy came and called him, the dog got all excited again shouting ‘my turn my turn’ and ran off, he stop and turn to me and asked me if I wanted a turn. I said thank you but I was feeling a little tired, so I headed off for a carrot and a rest.

I have been on another adventure. This time I went to a place called Lynton. I did a very long hop up lots of hills. My hop started down a long lane called Six Acre Lane, I hopped past fields and farms and met Gill and Garry, as I hopped past I said good morning and they stopped and gave me a funny look, then both said together are you a rabbit, you look like a rabbit, but we have never seen a white rabbit before. I was a little shocked and told them that yes I was a rabbit and I had never seen such big white ducks before. They thought this was very funny and started to laugh so loud other big white duck came over to see what all the fussy was about. When they had stopped laughing they told me they were geese. They asked where I was off to and then said I had a very long way to go, so I said bye-bye and headed off. I hopped up the side of a big hill where some goats were having their breakfast and met a baby goat called Billy. He was standing on a rock, he told me it was his rock and I couldn’t stand on it because he was the king of the castle, just then his mommy shouted over to play nicely and share. I told him it was OK I didn’t have time to play on his rock I was on a very long hop and told him where I was hopping too. He laughed and said I would need to be a mountain goat like him, I didn’t believe him. I think he was just being a bit mischievous. I asked if I could carry on along this track and he said only if you are a mountain goat. I said thank you and carried on, but he was right, I couldn’t carry on, so I turned round and went back down the hill. Soon I came to a place called Lee Abbey, which is a special place people who are called Christians can go for a quiet holiday and young people can go to have a nice holiday. Then I hopped under the big rocks of the valley of the rocks which was very steep and I thought I would fall over and roll all the way down! The path took me to Lynton which is a very long way above Lynmouth and if you look over the wall on the way to the cliff railway you can see Lynmouth and all the people and cars look like toys. There is a long winding steep path down to Lynmouth so I hopped down it and stopped on a bridge to look at the railway. After a hop around Lynmouth I got on the railway and went back to the top, and then it was the long hop up Lydiate lane which is very very steep. My little paws hurt so much. I think Billy was right.

Keep hopping
Today my people mommy said it was time to start to decorate the house, and she said I could decorate the tree for the kitchen if I want to. The kitchen tree is made of plastic so we can use it every year and it has all purple decorations. We have a very big tree in the living room, but that’s not put up yet because it is a real one that my people mommy and daddy have to fetch it from the Christmas tree farm. There are lots of pretty things to hang on the kitchen tree, round glittery globes, long dangly ones, ones with feather, which I put on my ears and my people mommy thought it was very funny. There is a ballet dancing fairy and a fairy for the top and lot’s of glittery ribbon. I got into a bit of a mess as I unpacked the box, I got the lights all tangled around me and the glittery dangly stuff all over me, my people mommy said I looked like the Christmas tree.

You can see my photo’s here, have you put up your decorations yet?

This time my adventure was at the seaside at a place called Weston-Super-Mare. Weston has a new pier because their old one burnt down, so my first hop was along the new pier. All along the middle there is a little tunnel that you can hop through I think it’s for when it is raining, it was raining but I didn’t hop down the tunnel. I wanted to hop outside and look at the sea, which is very, very big; it’s that big you can’t see the end of it. At the end of the pier there is a big building with lots of machines that you can play on and rides and even a race track, all of them had bright lights and were making lots of noise, it was all very pretty. After I had had a look around I hopped back into the town and hopped to Birnbeck pier. You can’t hop down Birnbeck pier because it is very old and dangerous, to get here I had to hop along a little path that went out into the sea, the sea was lapping over the path and it made my paws wet, I had great fun trying to hop over the big puddles. After that I hopped all the way to Uphill along the beach, it was a long hop but I met lot’s of friendly dogs along the way. One of them was name Billy and he told me he liked to play tricks on his people daddy. He told me to watch as his people daddy threw his ball into a big pool, Billy ran around to the other side of the pool and jumped in and swam backwards and forwards on the wrong side of the pool. His people daddy was calling and calling to him and pointing to the ball, but Billy just kept swimming on the wrong side. Then after a long time and lots of shouting from his daddy Billy look at me and grinned then swam to the ball and took it back to his daddy, his daddy said ‘Billy you are thick’ and Billy laughed and laughed. A bit further on I met a little dog who just couldn’t keep still, he was chasing the bigger dogs, but when they turned round to chase him he ran back to his people mommy and hit, then he was off again chasing another dog, he was very funny. There were dogs all over the place chasing balls and splashing in the sea. When I got to Uphill I tuned round and started the hop back, it had gone very cold and I wished I hadn’t hopped so far, by the time I got back into Weston it was dark but I got quite a surprise, the pier and big wheel were lit up, the lights on the pier changed colour, it all looked beautiful. I was very tired by now so headed for home.
