Bunty begins to learn about gardening

bun 004 My people mommy likes to grow food in the garden and the green house. Isn’t green house a silly name to call it, it’s not green at all, it’s all made of glass, except for the back and a piece in the roof. They are plastic because they got broke, but they are still not green.

I asked if I could grow something  nice to eat but my people mommy said all the main planting had been done, but I could try to grow Cress which doesn’t take very long to grow. I thought that sounded like fun, so I hopped down to the green house and found a container, put some soil in nearly to the top and sprinkled on the Cress seeds. Cress seeds are very small and brown, how can something grow out of them? Then I sprinkled some water on the top, now I have to wait.

There are lot’s of ways to grow cress, some people grow it in a saucer on cotton wool or tissues paper, my people mommy told me that once when she was at a place called school they grew it in an egg shell and drew a face on the shell so that the cress looked like hair. That sounds like fun. I might try that one day.

Bunty makes Something to Drink

bun 003Hello,

I have been making Elderflower Fizz.

There is a very big tree in the garden and my people mommy picks the flowers  every year to make a fizzy drink, this year she said I could make it.  My people mommy showed me the recipe in the recipe  book, a recipe is a list of what you need and how to put it all together to make something yummy to eat or drink . The recipe said I needed

6 Elderflowers
2lb sugar
3 lemons
10 litres water
4 tablespoons of white vinegar

I climb up the tree to pick the flowers, it was very high and wobbly but I didn’t fall, I had to look for flowers that were open and looked all creamy in colour, they smelt lovely. There were lots of spiders and webs in the tree and they all got stuck in my ears and they were very tickley. After I had climbed down I remembered to thank the tree by saying ‘Thank you Mother Elderflower for your bounty’ my people mommy say’s you should always thank the plants for what they share with us.

My people mommy told me everything has to be very clean when you are cooking so I scrubbed out the very big bucket and I fell in! My people mommy said I might find it easer if I turned the bucket on its side to clean it so I did that and it was. Then I had to put 10 litres of water in the bucket, it took a long time because I had to measure it out with a little jug and I had to remember to count the jugs. I then put all of the sugar in and had to stir and stir until all the sugar had dissolved, that means you can’t see it anymore. Next I had to cut the lemons in half very carefully with a sharp knife. My people mommy helped me hold the knife then I squeezed the juice in the bucket, lemons can be naughty the juice squirted everywhere, then I had to put all of the lemon skin and pips into the bucket. I had to measure the vinegar very carefully because too much would make the fizz taste nasty. My people mommy told me I had to shake the flowers very hard to get rid of all of the little bugs and then they went into the bucket and I gave it a big stir.

The bucket was very heavy so my people mommy moved it onto the cupboard and I put the tea-towel over the top. Then I had to wait for 24 whole hours, that’s until the next day before I could do anything else to it, 24 hours is a very long time when you are waiting.

The next day my people mommy said it was time to do the bottling and I needed to get out

Bottles
The plastic sieve
The funnel
Cloths
Sterilising tables

bun 007

My people mommy said I had to start by Sterilising everything, she put the cloth in a big saucepan of water and put it on the stove to boil to kill all the germs.  I had to mix the sterilising tables with water in a big jug. bunpop 001

and then I had to tip it into the bottles until they were full, I made ever such a mess, the water kept coming over the top of the bottles and spilling onto the table. I then had to wait for 15 minutes for the water to kill all the germs, why does everything involve waiting?bunpop 002

After I had waited the long 15 minutes it was time to put the cloth over the sieve, the cloth was very hot from all the boiling so I had to be very careful, the cloth is to stop all the bit’s of flowers and pips from the lemon going into the pop, my people mommy says it stops any little bugs too. ‘YUK’

bunpop 005

Next my people mommy helped me empty out the bottles and showed me how to fill them with the pop, you have to take care that you don’t fill them too much and leave room at the top, because they can blow-up if there’s not enough room for the fizz. So I filled all the bottles up to where my people mommy had shown me and put the lids on tight.
bunpop 006

You must always put a label on with what it is and the date so that everyone knows that it’s safe to drink and when they can drink it. Guess what? I have to wait again, a whole week before I can drink it.

Bunty looks for the Supermoon

supermoon 015 Hello,
My people mommy has been telling me all about the moon and the name’s that some people call  them. Yesterdays moon was called the Strawberry moon because June is when we harvest strawberries, (our strawberries are still green so I don’t think it’s always right),  it is also called the Honeymoon by Pagan people after the special beer they make called Honey Mead, and that it was also going to be a Supermoon, that means it gets close to the earth.  At first I was a little scared, I thought it might get too close and hit us, but my people mommy told me it wasn’t going to hit us, then I thought it would be fun to climb up the ladder and have a walk on the moon, but my people mommy told me it wasn’t going to get that near either. My people daddy said we could go and take some photos of it if I liked and my people mommy told me not to get upset if we didn’t get any, as Mother Nature doesn’t always want to play. I didn’t understand what she meant, but I was too excited to ask her and ran to get my hat. We got in the car and my people daddy drove us to the top of a big hill at a place called Clee Hills. I waited and waited but all I could see were clouds. Two sheep came over and told me their names were Sheila and Sally. They asked if I wanted to join them for tea, they were enjoying the grass, I said thank you but I have already had my tea, they munched on a little more than asked what I was doing. I told them all about the moon and they told me they had seen lot’s of them. Sally looked up and said she didn’t think I would see the moon because the clouds were getting thicker, and she was right. So we headed off home. My people mommy told me to go into the garden and look at the sky and there was the moon hiding behind some cloud. Now I understand what my people mommy meant about Mother Nature not wanting to play, our strawberries are not ripe and the clouds were too thick to see the moon and it’s all down to nature!

You can look at my Photos here.

If you like you can leave me your words, I like to read them.

Bunty goes to London

london 001hello

I have been on an adventure to a place called London. First of all I had to get the train to Birmingham, I have been on a train before, I like trains. Then I had to get on a coach. A coach is like a big bus, but the chairs are much bigger and you have to wear a seat belt, I was a bit scared that I wouldn’t be able to do it up right, but I soon sorted it out. It took a long time to get to London and the coach didn’t stop once to pick-up other people, not at all like the bus or train. My people brother had told me it would be easier for me to use the tube to get round London as my legs would get very tired if I tried to hop. I wasn’t sure how sitting on a tube was going to help me get anywhere and what about if I fell of. Then he explained that a tube was just like a train, but faster and you have to be quick getting on and off. The tube was very exciting first I brought my ticket from a big machine at Victoria station then got on a very fast escalator which took me underground into a big tunnel to the District line. All of a sudden I felt a wind blowing me and then the tube train was there, I thought that was funny, but I didn’t have time to think about it because all the people started to push and jump on and off the tube train, you have to be very quick because the tube doesn’t like to wait. The tube goes very quick, you can’t even see out of the windows because it is that quick, and you are in a big tunnel, I was a little scared. I got off at South Kensington and went to see the butterflies at The Natural History Museum, they are not there all the time so I was very lucky to see them. They were in a big tent and it was very hot and just like all the other butterflies I have ever met they were all darting around. Then I saw a very big butterfly who asked me if I was enjoying the visit, I told him I was but I wish one of them would stand still long enough for me to talk to them. He laughed and said he would show me around, he told me he was called an Owl butterfly because the dots on his wings look like owls eyes. He showed me his babies which are called caterpillars, they were very big and he showed me the plant they like to eat, they had eaten all the leaves off it. Then he show me where the caterpillars go and spin a web around themselves called a cocoon. Something very magical happens inside this cocoon, the caterpillars change into butterflies, I was just in time to see one breaking out of her cocoon. Then they have to sit and wait for their wings to dry before they can fly away, this is a dangerous time for them because birds can come along and eat them! He then showed me where all his friends were having their lunch, they were enjoying some fruit, he asked me if I would like to help the butterflies in our garden by planting flowers that they liked to drink the nectar from, I told him my people mommy already did have plants like that because she likes to see all the creatures in the garden, but I think I will ask her to leave the pineapple skins out because they really like them.

Then I went into the museum, it’s a very big museum and I didn’t have time to see all of it, but I did enjoy what I did see. I saw Visions of earth which has big sculptures and rocks form under the ground and a big map of the stars, then I got on an escalator up into a big red ball, I think we were going through the middle of earth. I then went to see From the Beginning, in here I learnt all about how the world was made and how all the little creatures started out. I then saw earths treasury which had lots of pretty stones in called gems and diamonds and other things called minerals, some of them were lovely and shiny under the lights. Restless Surface had lots of rocks to look at and some of them you could touch and I learnt all about how the weather and water and rain can change the ground.
I then went to look at the Dinosaurs, oh they were so big, I am glad they are not around anymore. I had a bit of a shock when I hopped around one corner and saw one moving, then I saw that it wasn’t real, I felt very silly. I then went to the mammals because my people bother had told me about the big Whale and the Dugong, they are not real because they have to live in water and the room wasn’t big enough for a tank that big. I liked looking at all the sea creatures. I would have liked to look around more but it was getting very busy and I had to go and find Camden Market.

bun 001I hopped back to the tube and got on the Piccadilly line, then I had to change at Leicester Square and hop onto the Northern line to Camden Town, again I felt a big wind just before the tube arrived and worked out that it was the tube coming down the tunnel that was making the wind. This time I wasn’t scared because I understood about the tube trains. My people bother had told me all about the markets and all the wonderful things you can see and buy if you want to. So I hopped to the part of the market called Camden Stables Market I was looking for something to give my people daddy for Fathers Day, I saw big floppy hats which my people mommy would have liked and pretty lamps, but nothing that I thought my people daddy would like, then I saw a leather stall and found him a nice new wallet. I liked the Stable market because there were big statues of horses all over the place. Then it was time to get back on the tube, so I hopped to the station at Euston and hopped onto the Victoria line, then it was a short hop back to the coach station and onto the coach back to Birmingham. Then the train home. I was a very tired bunny when I got home, I had left my house at 7.20 to start my adventure and didn’t get back home until 10.30, but I had a lovely day.

Keep hopping and you can leave me your words if you like.

Bunty gets a new friend

Hello,

I haven’t been on an adventure for a very long time. I got very tired and the weather got very horrible and stopped me from going out, but now I feel much better so I have decided to have some more adventures. First I want to tell you about my new friend, he is called Hamlet, he won’t be coming on adventures because he sleeps all day and has his adventures at night when I am asleep. Hamlet came to live with us earlier this year, he is a hedgehog and my people family adopted him. My people brother works with a very kind lady who loves animals and she had lot’s of baby hedgehog who couldn’t hibernate last winter because they weren’t fat enough. Hibernate means go for a very long sleep all through the winter so they have to be fat because they don’t like waking up. The kind lady looked after them all winter and in the spring my people brother brought one home to live in our garden. My people daddy made him a house to live in and my people mommy made him a feeding station, which my people brother calls the banqueting suite, I think that means a posh cafe, because you have to feed the hedgehogs too. Sometimes there’s not enough food for them because people use things called pesticides and fence off their gardens to the floor, so poor little hedgehogs can’t wander around to find food. Would you like to meet Hamlet? You will have to be very quiet he’s very shy, here he is….
